Makassar was very ably led in the initial 50 percent on the seventeenth century when it efficiently resisted Dutch tension to close down its trade to Maluku and manufactured allies in lieu of enemies in the neighboring Bugis states. Karaeng Matoaya (c.1573–1636) was the ruler of Tallo from 1593,
